The Continuous Evolution of Components
Components are reusable building blocks in Figma, but they are also dynamic entities. As projects develop and requirements change, components must adapt. This section will dive into how to manage those modifications effectively.
Steps to Modify a Component in Figma:
Understand the Need: Before modifying a component, understand why the change is needed. Whether it is for visual enhancements, new functionality or fixes, having a clear reason will guide your decisions.
- Analyze the Current Structure: Examine the current component in terms of layout, interactions and states. How is it used in the existing design? Which instances will be affected by the change?

- Design Documentation: Refer to the component's design documentation. This will remind you how it was originally designed and what its rules and guidelines are.
- Make Changes to a Copy: Before directly modifying the master component, create a copy of it to make the changes. This prevents drastic changes that may affect existing instances.
- Implement and Test: Carry out the changes to the copy of the component. Make sure the changes are consistent and work correctly. Test in different scenarios to validate the improvements.
- Validation and Feedback: Share the modifications with other team members to get feedback. Consider opinions and suggestions before moving forward.
- Update Instances: Once the modifications have been validated, The Aqua team will apply the changes to the master component. This ensures that all instances are automatically updated.
- Extensive Testing: Perform extensive testing throughout the design to verify that the modifications have not caused problems elsewhere.
- Documentation Update: Be sure to update the component documentation to reflect the modifications made. This keeps everyone in the same context.
- Communicate Changes: If you are working in a team, communicate to members about modifications made and how they will affect their work.
How to modify a master component in Figma ?
-
Create a new file:
For the security of the project you cannot modify the master components directly. This is to keep control of the modifications that are made in the components and that these do not affect the instances used in the projects. If you have doubts about how to create a new file in Figma you can visit the following link How to create files in Figma ?
-
Select the component:
When you have created your new file, in the left panel there is a tab called Assets click on it and you will be able to search for the component you need.
